Disney Researchers Create A Way To Make Geared Figures That Look Amazingly Life-Like
For centuries the creation of geared automata has been sort of a dark art. To design a mechanical device to move like a human or animal was a trick in itself and to build the gears and rods necessary to propel the thing was even trickier. A team of Disney researchers, however, have created a system that will let puppeteers... (Read more!)

Kerbal Engineering
You've heard of rocket science,
you've heard of bottle rockets,
you've heard of Russia engineering,
you've heard of the Russian N1 right?
(you couldn't possibly do much worse...)

A 3D-printed jumbo jet?
Designer Bastian Schaefer shows off a speculative design for the future
of jet planes, with a skeleton inspired by strong, flexible, natural
forms and by the needs of the world's, ahem, growing population. Imagine
an airplane that's full of light and space -- and built up from
generative parts in a 3D printer.

Two young scientists break down plastics with bacteria
Once it's created, plastic (almost) never dies. While in 12th
grade Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao went in search of a new bacteria to
biodegrade plastic -- specifically by breaking down phthalates, a
harmful plasticizer. They found an answer surprisingly close to home.

Alfredo Moser: Bottle light inventor proud to be poor
Alfredo Moser's invention is lighting up the world. In 2002, the
Brazilian mechanic had a light-bulb moment and came up with a way of
illuminating his house during the day without electricity - using
nothing more than plastic bottles filled with water and a tiny bit of
bleach.

"Wouldn't it be cool if...?"
Engineering is useful, fun, really cool, makes an impact, and actually everyone can do it.
Creativity and Imagination
Need a burst of inspiration? Wildly creative thinkers share ideas,
strategies and warmhearted encouragement to let your genius out.
Smart Materials
Ink that conducts electricity; a window that turns from clear to opaque
at the flip of a switch; a jelly that makes music. All this stuff
exists, and Catarina Mota says: It's time to play with it. Mota leads us
on a tour of surprising and cool new materials, and suggests that the
way we'll figure out what they're good for is to experiment, tinker and
have fun.
